In April, ESAB participated in the 60^th annual SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Corpus Christi, Texas. This three-day event featured contests for high school students in leadership and entrepreneurship as well as skills competitions in cosmetology, welding, carpentry, brickworking and aviation maintenance. Students participating in this statewide competition had previously qualified at regional competitions held throughout the state. State winners qualify for the national competition held in June. The event highlights skills in industries that are experiencing shortages because of an aging work force. More than 5000 people attended the event, with 35 companies participating as exhibitors, volunteers or sponsors.

The competition was sponsored by SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. Formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure that America maintains a skilled work force. The organization facilitates trade and industry education, enhances curriculum and helps students develop essential skills such as communication and teamwork to help them gain a competitive edge in the work force.

ESAB brought its Solutions Truck to the competition and provided demonstrations of welding and cutting equipment for competitors and spectators. The company also supplied a large number of free give-aways.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for ESAB to receive good exposure to new welders,” said ESAB Sales Representative Mary Ellen Garner. “Students from all across Texas participated in this event.”
