The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has increased interest in buying American-made filler metals. Did you know that ESAB has offered one of the largest selections of filler metals on the market today for many years, and most of these products are manufactured in ESAB’s U.S. plants located in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and Ashtabula, Ohio? All our aluminum wires are manufactured by AlcoTec in Traverse City, Michigan. The majority of our green rod sources for Stick, SAW and MIG products come from domestically produced steel and 100% of our Dual Shield, Coreshield, Alloy Shield and Coreweld products are made from domestically produced steel.
Our filler metal plants in Hanover and Ashtabula have produced many well-known filler metal brands since 1940, and, with a dedicated staff of world-class research engineers and scientists, continues to pioneer new processes and products to meet the needs of our customers. All ESAB electrodes are produced and tested in accordance with AWS specifications and conform to the standards of the military as well as agencies such as the American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyds Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas. Both filler metal manufacturing plants have recently expanded and improved their facilities to ensure continued excellence in quality and availability.

SEMA Car is Big Hit

The updated Fiat Gasser featured in our last newsletter and exhibited at the SEMA show in November was such a big hit that it was also exhibited at the FABTECH show two weeks later. The remodeled 1959 Fiat 500, owned by Bob Hershey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and rebuilt by Legacy Innovations of York, Pennsylvania, was featured on the Car Domain website and blog, the New York Times automotive blog, and was named one of the SEMA Top 10 by Car and Driver.
In case you missed the story in the last issue, the 1959 Fiat has been updated with a 4130 Chrome Moly tube chassis, tilt body, custom-built billet struts, four-speed Lenco transmission, 830 HP Reher Morrison 427ci small block Chevy engine, Hogan manifold, custom stainless steel headers and exhaust, 15x12 street lites, a custom-built 9-inch rear and a snazzy yellow paint job.
The welding and cutting on this job was done exclusively with ESAB welding and cutting products. The cutting was done with a PowerCut 650 plasma cutter, the TIG welding, which is the bulk of the work, was done with the new CaddyTig 2200i AC/DC and Heliarc 161, and the small amount of MIG welding on sheet metal was done with the Migmaster 203. Legacy Innovations also uses ESAB filler metals exclusively. This project used Spoolarc 83 (ER80S-D2), Spoolarc 65 (ER70S-2), Arcaloy 312, Arcaloy 308, All State Silicon Bronze TIG, Spoolarc Easy Grind MIG wire, AlcoTec 4043 TIG rod, and AlcoTec 5356 TIG rod and MIG wire.

Welder Creates Native American Folkart Metal Masterpiece

Stephen Hyatt has been a welder since 1973 and is currently employed welding aircraft parts at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. He has a great deal of experience doing TIG welding with an ESAB Heliarc 161. He also does some welding in his shop at home and specializes in welding titanium. He made this Native American head from titanium using running beads of weld from 3/32 weld wire on blocks of cold rolled steel. He placed individual beads to create the face. The war bonnet was made from flat sheets of titanium cut to look like eagle feathers. The color was added by moving an argon torch close to the metal and then back away as the metal is cooling off.
The finished piece is occasionally displayed at his worksite during multi-cultural weeks.

Controlling Corrosion in Stainless Steel
Corrosion in stainless steel is one of the most troublesome technical concerns for fabricators and users. Whether localized or more widespread, corrosion takes on many forms including general corrosion, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion, pitting corrosion and stress corrosion.
Corrosion is defined as an undesirable deterioration of the metal as a result of a chemical or electrochemical reaction caused by the environment. Welds often do not exhibit the same level of corrosion resistance found in the base metal, even when everything is done correctly. But if not done correctly, the corrosion in the welds can be higher. Here are some tips to prevent this potentially catastrophic problem.
First, choose the right filler metal for the job.
