When the FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show hits McCormick Place in Chicago on November 15-18, ESAB will be there with a championship display of welding and cutting capabilities. This annual event brings together more than 1000 exhibitors and an expected 35,000 attendees and features thousands of live equipment demonstrations.
This year, ESAB will demonstrate that we are the “undisputed champion” of welding and cutting with numerous new products and solutions for all applications from manual to high production automated lines.
Our “heavyweight” booth, #34043, will feature solutions for automation, submerged arc welding and other high production applications.
Our “middleweight” booth, #40035, will focus on manual equipment and solutions for smaller shops and individual welders.
Visit both booths, take the “tour” and demo some equipment and you’ll be registered for a chance to win a Wii and a Mike Tyson knock-out game.
Join us in Booth #34043 on Monday, November 16, at 2:30 pm for a special birthday celebration for our Marathon Pac. We’ve been offering welding wire in this innovative bulk package since 1989. We were the first to offer you this economical and productive solution for non-stop welding, and we intend to continue to pioneer innovative packaging solutions for many years to come. Over the years, the Marathon Pac and Endless Drum™ system have helped countless customers improve their productivity by decreasing the number of interruptions needed to change to a new package of wire. Come join us for cake and celebration!

Updated Fiat Gasser Featured at SEMA

The car featured in the ESAB booth (#21328) at SEMA 2009, held November 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is not your average automobile. This remodeled 1959 Fiat 500 has been upgraded to become probably the most high-end Fiat gasser ever built.
Owner Bob Hershey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, bought the car from a friend who initially started the project, then lost interest. Hershey thought the car was “hilarious,” so he hired Legacy Innovations of York, Pennsylvania, to do the bulk of the project. Legacy Innovations consists of Troy Spackman, owner and fabricator; Matt Wolfe, mechanical and electrical; and Travis Coeyman, body and paint. The three 25-year-olds have “worked very hard to learn and grow to be the best at what we do,” says Spackman. “We strive for the highest quality, functionality and ingenuity.” This car certainly demonstrates all three.
The car has been updated with a 4130 Chrome Moly tube chassis, tilt body, custom-built billet struts, four-speed Lenco transmission, 830 HP Reher Morrison 427ci small block Chevy engine, Hogan manifold, custom stainless steel headers and exhaust, 15x12 street lites, a custom-built 9-inch rear and a snazzy yellow paint job. The finished car bears very little resemblance to the Fiat it once was, and has all the power it will need to hit the drag track someday.

Troy Scherer built this unusual toilet scooter as a fun at-home project in his spare time. This inventive, albeit hilarious, project features an all aluminum chassis and aluminum treadbright fenders. The 36-volt electric transaxle was taken from a mobility scooter. All parts were cut with ESAB’s HandyPlasma 250 and welded with the Migmaster 250.

Welding with Metal-Cored Wire
Common Problems Encountered When Welding with Metal-cored Wire
Metal-cored wires provide a high deposition rate. Once they realize the ramifications of this high deposition, many welders try to pour as much metal into the joint as possible. This can lead to problems. One of the biggest problems welders encounter when they convert to metal-cored wires for multiple pass weld joints is that they tend to “ride” the puddle rather than staying on the leading edge of the puddle. This results in inadequate penetration, and in some cases, failed radiographs or UT inspections.
