To open and close acetylene cylinder
valves not provided with hand-wheels, always use the special wrench
or key provided by the supplier.
Leave the wrench or key in position, ready for immediate
use should it be necessary
to close the valve promptly. (When several cylinders are manifolded together,
a wrench on every cylinder
is not required.) Never
use the recessed top of any fuel gas cylinder as a place for tools.
It is best to keep acetylene cylinders
upright at all times. Do not store
them in the horizontal position; do not draw
acetylene from a cylinder except when it is upright. If an acetylene cylinder
is used in the horizontal position, solvent
may be lost and flame quality may be affected. Keep
liquid oxygen cylinders vertical. If
oxygen is provided in low-pressure liquid oxygen cylinders designed to
supply gas for welding or cutting,
always keep such cylinders vertical; never lay one of them on its side. The broad
base and substantial weight of a liquid
cylinder make accidental tipping or knocking over very unlikely.
Never use any cylinder, full or empty,
as a roller or support.
Never, never use oxygen as though it
were compressed air. A serious accident
may easily result if oxygen is used
as a substitute for compressed air. Oxygen must never be used in pneumatic tools,
in oil preheating burners, to
start internal combustion engines, to blow out pipelines, to dust
clothing or work, for pressure tests of any kind, or
for ventilation. Oxygen or air rich in oxygen should never be allowed to saturate
any part of the clothing since a spark
might easily start a serious flash fire. Do
not handle oxygen cylinders on the same platform with oil, or
place them in any position where oil or grease
from overhead cranes or belts may fall on them. Unless
they are secured on a suitable cylinder truck, do not move cylinders without first
removing regulators
and replacing protective cap. Never
use slings or electromagnets for lifting cylinders. Do not lift cylinders by the
protective cap alone. When
moving cylinders, use suitable hand truck or racks whenever possible.
